Values - Business Improvement Tip

All our decisions in life are based around the things that we value most. These are things like family, money, success, helping others, etc, we are all different and have different ways of expressing these values. For most people these values are in our subconscious and we do not take the time to think about them and bring them to our controlled consciousness. The importance of knowing and controlling our values is that we are able to understand ourselves, what drives us and why we make the decisions we make. It also helps us to understand why are in the position in life that we find ourselves now, good or bad.

The second great use of values is understanding the values of our team and those people around us, friends and family, because with this knowledge we have a greater ability to motivate, help, understand and move them towards their goals and what is important in their lives.

The exercise that we undertook was very powerful and helped the members to better understand themselves and a great tool to help them understand their teams.

Most of the business people I know, including myself, have a challenge with time, i.e. We never have enough. Now I understand that so many people call this “Time Management”, but the real facts are that you cannot manage time, the clock does not stop ticking. You can, though, manage what you do within the time you are here. The main discussion centred around Ken Blanchard’s excellent book “The On-Time On-Target manager” and the helpful strategies contained in that. One of the other main skills with managing yourself, in my opinion, is that before you can successfully manage yourself, you need to know what are the most important things in your life and what are your goals. This will give you focus and the ability to choose those tasks that are the most important and take you towards your goals.
